Picture the scene – a tree-lined provincial village square; a hundred and sixty people playing French boules, the click-clack of the steel balls hitting against each other. The sounds of French music played by a beret wearing accordionist; the pop as a bottle of wine is opened; people having picnics under the trees.

Idyllic – but this wasn’t in Provence, this was in Monymusk, Aberdeenshire, and the boules players were there to compete in ‘Monymusk Boules’, an event which has been run eight times previously and which has raised over £32,000 for mostly local good causes.

The final results:

High Road:- 1st (and overall winners) - Macduff Boule Sharks

2nd - Alford Tauros / 3rd - Load of Old Boules /

4th - Bouldilocks and the Three Bears

Low Road:- 1st - Stonehaven Fireboules Un

2nd - Stonehaven Fireboules Deux / 3rd - The Salmon Boule-inis

4th - The Somnamboulistes

A great day was had and more than £2k was raised for good causes.

Next year's event will be on Saturday 25th May

Put that in your calendars!
